FRANZCP

Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

Overview

The Fellowship examinations of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) are high-level, summative assessments that represent a core requirement for doctors seeking specialist recognition as psychiatrists in Australia and New Zealand. These examinations are designed to confirm that trainees have achieved the depth of knowledge, clinical competence, and professional judgement expected at the completion of psychiatric training.

The examinations assess learning and experience gained across Stages 1 to 3 of the RANZCP training program, ensuring candidates have a comprehensive understanding of both the scientific foundations of psychiatry and its clinical application. They evaluate a trainee’s ability to integrate theory with practice, manage complex mental health presentations, and deliver safe, ethical, and evidence-based psychiatric care across diverse clinical settings.

A key component of the assessment program is the computer-based Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) examination, which runs for approximately 190 minutes. This exam focuses on core knowledge areas such as neuroscience, psychopharmacology, psychopathology, and essential clinical skills, testing a candidate’s understanding of mechanisms of disease, treatment principles, and diagnostic frameworks. In addition to factual knowledge, the MCQ exam assesses the ability to apply concepts to clinically relevant scenarios.

Complementing this is the Modified Essay Question (MEQ) examination, a 150-minute written assessment that places strong emphasis on higher-order thinking skills. Through structured, case-based questions, the MEQ exam evaluates clinical reasoning, critical analysis, and decision-making, requiring candidates to demonstrate how they would assess, diagnose, and manage complex psychiatric cases over time. Together, these examination components ensure that successful candidates are well prepared to progress to independent specialist practice as psychiatrists within the Australasian healthcare system.

The RANZCP Exam:

Exam Structure & Components

  • MCQ Exam: A 190-minute computer-based test at Pearson VUE centers focusing on Stage 1 and 2 syllabus knowledge (neuroscience, pharmacology, critical analysis).
  • MEQ Exam (Modified Essay Question): Tests critical thinking in clinical practice, featuring 4–6 questions (125 total marks) over 150 minutes. It is held in March and September, transitioning to a computer-based format in metropolitan centres for 2026.
  • Clinical Assessment: The Clinical Competency Assessment – Modified Portfolio Review (CCA – MPR) is the primary clinical exam from April 2024–April 2026, focusing on portfolio review rather than live, in-person OSCEs.
  • Discontinued Exam: The Critical Essay Question (CEQ) exam was discontinued in June 2025 and replaced with alternative learning modules.

RANZCP Exam Eligibility

To be eligible to sit the RANZCP Fellowship examinations, candidates must meet a number of formal registration and training requirements that confirm they are appropriately enrolled in the psychiatry training pathway and legally permitted to practise medicine.

Firstly, candidates must be actively registered with the RANZCP as either a psychiatry trainee or a Specialist International Medical Graduate (SIMG). In addition, they must hold current and valid medical registration in either Australia or New Zealand at the time of applying for and sitting the examinations. This ensures that all candidates are practising within the regulatory frameworks of the relevant medical boards.

The timing of the examinations is closely linked to progression through the training program. The Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) examination is usually undertaken during Stage 2 of training, once the trainee has completed a minimum of six months of full-time equivalent psychiatry training. This exam is intended to assess foundational and developing knowledge that trainees are expected to have acquired early in their specialist training.

The written essay-based examinations, including the Modified Essay Questions (MEQ) and Critical Essay Questions (CEQ), are subject to more advanced eligibility criteria. Candidates must have reached specific stages of training and demonstrated satisfactory progress before they are permitted to attempt these assessments. These exams require a higher level of clinical reasoning, integration of theory and practice, and reflective thinking, which aligns with later stages of the training program.

In addition to exam-specific requirements, trainees must also have met a range of mandatory training milestones. These include completion of required clinical rotations, participation in regular and documented clinical supervision, and satisfactory performance in workplace-based assessments. The RANZCP uses these criteria to ensure that candidates have had adequate clinical exposure and educational support before being assessed in high-stakes examinations.

Overall, the eligibility framework is designed to ensure that candidates attempt each examination at an appropriate point in their training, with sufficient clinical experience and professional development to demonstrate competence at the expected level.
