Overview
The Overseas Pharmacist Readiness Assessment (OPRA) or (OPRA Exam) is a standardized, computer-delivered examination developed and administered by the Australian Pharmacy Council (APC). Its purpose is to evaluate whether pharmacists who were trained outside Australia have the level of knowledge and clinical competence required to practise safely and effectively within the Australian healthcare system.
The exam runs for approximately 2.5 hours and consists of 120 multiple-choice questions. These questions are designed to test not just factual recall, but also a candidate’s ability to apply pharmaceutical knowledge to real-world clinical scenarios. A strong emphasis is placed on therapeutics, clinical decision-making, and patient-centred care, reflecting the expanded clinical role of pharmacists in Australia.
From March 2025 onward, the OPRA officially replaces the Knowledge Assessment of Pharmaceutical Sciences (KAPS) exam. Compared to KAPS, OPRA places greater weight on practical clinical knowledge, including the management of common and complex conditions, appropriate medicine selection, monitoring for safety and efficacy, and alignment with Australian treatment guidelines and professional practice standards.

- Other Domains: Includes Biomedical Sciences (20%), Pharmacology/Toxicology (15%), Pharmaceutical Chemistry (10%), and Pharmacokinetics (10%).
- Scoring: Uses Rasch methodology for fair, accurate, and consistent evaluation.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Overseas Pharmacist Readiness Assessment (OPRA) exam, candidates must hold a Bachelor of Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from a recognized institution, maintain active pharmacist registration in their home country, and meet English language proficiency requirements. No prior work experience is required, and the exam is open to internationally trained pharmacists.
Key Eligibility Requirements:
- Education: A 4-year Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) or equivalent (e.g., PharmD) from an accredited institution.
- Registration: Current, active registration as a pharmacist in the country where the qualification was obtained.
- English Language Proficiency: Must provide valid results (less than 2 years old) from one of the following:
- IELTS Academic: Minimum overall band score of 7.5, with no individual band score below 7.0.
- OET (Pharmacy): Minimum score of ‘B’ in all four components.
- PTE Academic: Proficient or superior scores.
- Skills Assessment: Candidates must pass the Australian Pharmacy Council skills assessment (Knowledge Stream).
- Experience: No work experience is required to sit for the exam.
Application Process:
- Verification: Obtain official documents and certificates to prove qualifications.
- Skills Assessment: Complete the Australian Pharmacy Council eligibility check, which costs approximately AUD 810.
- Registration: Register for the OPRA exam after receiving a successful skills assessment outcome.
- Fee: The OPRA exam fee is approximately AUD 2,190.
Candidates from countries including India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and various African nations are eligible for the Knowledge stream.
