NPE
National Psychology Exam
Overview
The National Psychology Exam (NPE exam) in Australia is a mandatory, regulatory hurdle for provisional psychologists and certain overseas-trained practitioners seeking general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PBA). It ensures that applicants possess the minimum threshold competencies required to practice safely and ethically, acting as a final, critical step before independent practice.
The Exam
- Format: 150 multiple-choice questions based on case studies and scenarios.
- Duration: 3.5 hours (210 minutes).
- Pass Mark: A scaled score of 70% is required to pass.
- Structure: Four domains (Ethics, Assessment, Intervention, Communication).
- Frequency: Held four times a year in specified, separate sittings.
- Delivery Method: “Dual delivery” – candidates can choose to sit in a designated Kryterion test center (available in capital cities) or via online proctoring (remote) from home/work.
Key Components and Content
The exam tests applied knowledge, not just theoretical understanding. The content is derived from the Board’s published curriculum and focuses on:
- Ethics (30%): Legal, ethical, and professional conduct (e.g., APS Code of Ethics).
- Assessment (30%): Psychological tests, risk assessment, and DSM diagnostic criteria.
- Intervention (30%): Evidence-based, culturally safe psychological interventions.
- Communication (10%): Reporting, documentation, and professional communication.
Who Must Sit the Exam?
- Provisional psychologists in the 4+2 internship program.
- Provisional psychologists in the 5+1 internship pathway.
- Overseas-trained psychologists seeking general registration.
- Individuals returning to practice after an extended break (generally 5–10+ years).
Exemptions
- Applicants who have completed a higher degree pathway (e.g., Master’s or Doctorate) accredited at the 5th and 6th-year level.
- New Zealand psychologists applying under Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition.
Results and Retakes
- Results are emailed 4–6 weeks after the exam period.
- Candidates receive only a pass/fail result, not their specific score or detailed feedback.
- If a candidate fails, they must re-sit the entire exam and wait at least three months.
- After three failures, the Board requires a formal review, including a statement and plan for professional development from the candidate and their supervisor before further attempts are permitted.
Preparation
Candidates are advised to use the official Candidate Manual, the Exam Curriculum, and the Recommended Reading List, all available on the Psychology Board of Australia website. The exam is designed to reflect the knowledge acquired during the supervised internship.
Eligibility
Overall role of the NPE
In short, the NPE functions as a final safeguard in the registration process. It ensures that psychologists who have followed non-standard or extended pathways—or who are re-entering the profession—meet the same professional expectations as those trained through fully accredited Australian programs.
NOTE: Applicants must meet English language proficiency standards (e.g., IELTS 7) and demonstrate fitness to practice. The exam covers ethical, professional, and practical competencies.
