FRACGP
Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
Overview
The Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) is widely regarded as the gold-standard specialist qualification for general practitioners in Australia. It formally recognises that a doctor has achieved the knowledge, clinical skills, and professional judgement required to practise independently and safely as a GP, without the need for supervision, in a wide range of healthcare settings.
Earning the FRACGP Qualification involves completing a structured postgraduate training pathway that typically spans three years. This training combines experience in hospital-based rotations with extensive placements in general practice clinics, allowing doctors to develop broad clinical expertise across preventive care, acute and chronic disease management, mental health, and community-based medicine. Throughout this period, trainees are exposed to diverse patient populations and clinical scenarios, helping them build the adaptability and decision-making skills essential for general practice.
In addition to completing the training program, candidates must successfully pass three rigorous examinations that assess different aspects of general practice competence. The Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) evaluates a candidate’s theoretical and clinical knowledge. The Key Feature Problems (KFP) exam focuses on clinical reasoning and decision-making in complex, real-world scenarios. The Clinical Competency Exam (CCE) assesses practical consultation skills, communication, and the ability to manage patients effectively in a clinical setting.
Together, the training program and examinations ensure that doctors awarded the FRACGP meet nationally recognised standards and are fully prepared to deliver high-quality, comprehensive primary healthcare across Australia.
Key Aspects of FRACGP Exam:
- Purpose: Ensures high-quality, safe, and comprehensive primary care in metropolitan, rural, and remote areas.
- Components: The Fellowship involves three examination parts:
- Applied Knowledge Test (AKT): A written test of clinical knowledge.
- Key Feature Problems (KFP): A written test focusing on clinical decision-making.
- Clinical Competency Exam (CCE): A practical, simulation-based exam (like OSCEs) testing clinical skills, patient interaction, and clinical reasoning.
- Pathway Duration: Typically a three-year full-time (or equivalent) vocational training program.
- Eligibility: Requires completion of specific, accredited training prerequisites.
- Recognition: Provides specialist medical registration in Australia, often allowing for independent, unsupervised work, and is recognized globally.
- Additional Qualifications: Opportunities exist for extending skills, such as the Fellowship in Advanced Rural General Practice (FARGP).
FRACGP represents the highest standard for GPs in Australia, reflecting dedication to patient care and professional expertise.
Eligibility
FRACGP exam eligibility requires being a Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) registered candidate (AGPT, RVTS, or PEP) with current Australian medical registration, and having completed two years (FTE) of training, including GPT1 and GPT2, by the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) date. Candidates must pass the AKT and Key Feature Problems (KFP) exams before attempting the Clinical Competency Exam (CCE).
