Overview
The AIMS Professional Examination is a Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) paper consisting of 150 single response questions to be completed in three (3) hours. The examination is conducted twice a year in March and September using online remote proctored software. Remote proctoring involves sitting the exam under live supervision using your computer’s webcam and your mobile phone in a suitable location with reliable internet connectivity.
The examination is set at the level expected of a professional Medical Laboratory Scientist with at least two (2) years fulltime (or part-time equivalent) postgraduate professional experience. Completed examinations are not released under any circumstances.
The examination consists of seven sections covering the following professional disciplines: Anatomical Pathology*, Chemical Pathology*, Molecular Pathology, Haematology*, Immunopathology, Medical Microbiology* and Transfusion Science*. Questions in all sections MUST be attempted and those disciplines asterisked (*) MUST be passed (i.e., at least 50% in each discipline) and a pass mark of 50% in either Molecular Pathology or Immunopathology must be achieved. To pass the examination overall 75 questions MUST be answered correctly.

Eligibility
To qualify for the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS) Professional Examination, applicants must meet a set of educational, professional, and language requirements that demonstrate their readiness for practice in Australia.
Firstly, candidates must have completed a relevant tertiary qualification in medical laboratory science, typically a Bachelor’s degree or higher, from a recognised institution. This ensures they possess the necessary academic foundation in pathology and laboratory sciences.
In addition to formal education, applicants are generally expected to have substantial practical experience working in a medical pathology laboratory. This usually includes a minimum of two years of full-time, paid post-graduate employment. Importantly, at least one year of this experience must have been completed within the past five years, ensuring that the candidate’s skills and knowledge are current and aligned with modern laboratory practices.
Candidates must also demonstrate proficiency in English by achieving acceptable scores in an approved language test, such as IELTS, OET, or PTE Academic. This requirement confirms their ability to communicate effectively and safely in a professional healthcare environment.
Finally, before being permitted to sit the Professional Examination, applicants must undergo a formal skills assessment conducted by AIMS. This assessment verifies that the candidate’s qualifications, work experience, and competencies meet Australian standards and determines their overall eligibility for the examination.
Key AIMS Exam Eligibility Requirements
- Education: A bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory technology or a closely related science field.
- Experience: A minimum of two (2) years full-time (or part-time equivalent) postgraduate professional experience in a medical pathology laboratory.
- Recent Experience: At least one (1) year of this experience must be within the five (5) year period immediately prior to applying for assessment.
