ADC
Australian Dental Council
Overview
The Australian Dental Council examination (ADC exam) is a compulsory assessment pathway for dentists who obtained their qualifications outside Australia and wish to practise as registered dentists in the country. It is designed to ensure that internationally trained dentists meet the same entry-level standards of knowledge, clinical competence, and professional judgment expected of Australian dental graduates.
The ADC process begins with an initial assessment, where the council verifies an applicant’s dental qualifications, training background, and eligibility to enter the examination pathway. Once approved, candidates proceed to the written examination, which is conducted over two days and consists of approximately 280 scenario-based multiple-choice questions (MCQs). This exam assesses foundational and applied dental knowledge across a wide range of disciplines, including diagnosis, treatment planning, patient management, and clinical decision-making, all within the context of Australian dental practice.
Successful candidates are then eligible to sit the practical examination, also delivered over two days. This component includes OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examinations) and hands-on technical skills assessments. It evaluates a candidate’s ability to apply clinical knowledge in realistic scenarios, demonstrate practical dental procedures, communicate effectively, and uphold professional and safety standards.
Overall, the ADC examination ensures that internationally qualified dentists are competent, safe, and prepared to deliver dental care in accordance with Australian regulatory and professional expectations.
Key Information:
- The exam ensures practitioners meet Australian entry-level standards.
- The written exam is offered at various global locations via Pearson VUE.
- Passing both parts is required for registration with the Dental Board of Australia via AHPRA.
Eligibility
Eligibility for the Australian Dental Council (ADC) examination requires internationally qualified dentists to possess an approved dental qualification that is comparable to Australian standards. Specifically, applicants must have completed a minimum four-year, full-time university dental degree or diploma from a recognized institution, providing comprehensive academic and clinical training in dentistry.
Before being permitted to sit the ADC examinations, candidates must undergo an initial assessment of qualifications conducted by the ADC. This assessment verifies the authenticity, duration, and content of the applicant’s dental education and confirms that it meets the council’s requirements for entry into the examination pathway. Only candidates who successfully pass this assessment are allowed to progress further.
Once approved, the outcome of the initial assessment remains valid for seven years, giving candidates sufficient time to prepare for and complete both the written examination and the practical (clinical and skills-based) examination. This structured eligibility process ensures that only suitably trained international dentists proceed to the ADC exams and ultimately enter the Australian dental workforce with qualifications aligned to national standards.
